What Will Your Municipality Take at the Curb?

Large item collection in Durham Region runs on four different sets of rules, and the Region's own pages send Oshawa and Whitby residents elsewhere. This puts all eight municipalities in one place, tells you what is free, and works out how long the municipal route actually takes.

Your municipal option

Oshawa collects furniture and bulky items free of charge, up to 6 items per collection.

Every other week, on your regular garbage day, booked at least 2 business days ahead. Run by the City of Oshawa.

  • •Out no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before and no later than 7 a.m. on collection day
  • •Nothing longer than 3 m or heavier than 70 kg
  • •Bundled items must be under 76 cm long, 36 cm wide, 36 cm high, and 20 kg
  • •Remove all doors from appliances

In Oshawa the item limit covers the whole collection, so furniture, appliances, electronics, and porcelain all count against the same 6.

Weight is an estimate only, since loads are weighed on a scale on arrival. Credit, prepaid card, or debit only. No cash, no cheques. Your vehicle is weighed on the way in and on the way out, and you are told the cost at the exit scale.

All eight municipalities, side by side

The Region of Durham collects large items for six municipalities. Oshawa and Whitby run their own programs, which is why the rules and the price change depending on which side of a municipal boundary you live on.

The limits above are for furniture and bulky goods. In the six municipalities the Region collects for, metal goods, electronics, and porcelain have no item limit at all, though each needs an appointment. In Oshawa and Whitby a single booking covers every stream, so those item limits are shared across all of it.

Taking it yourself

Anything the curbside programs will not take, and anything over the item limit, can go to a Regional Waste Management Facility. For a single item this is almost always the cheapest route there is.

What it costs

  • •$7 flat for loads up to 40 kg
  • •$1.40 for every additional 8 kg
  • •$175 per tonne for general waste
  • •$375 per tonne for fill material like soil, brick, and concrete
  • •$250 per tonne for mixed loads containing fill
  • •$20 per unit for fridges, freezers, and air conditioners

This is the detail that catches people out: a load mixing free and chargeable material is charged on its entire weight. Keep a load of electronics separate from a load of furniture. Daily limits apply: 50 litres or 25 containers of household hazardous waste per vehicle, 40 fluorescent bulbs or tubes per vehicle, 10 tires per vehicle.

Common questions

In most of Durham, yes, but only a couple of items at a time and often only if you book first. Ajax and Pickering take up to two bulky items on your regular biweekly garbage day with no appointment. Brock, Clarington, Scugog, and Uxbridge take the same two items but by appointment only. Oshawa allows six items and Whitby twelve, both booked ahead. Check the lookup above for your municipality, because setting an item out where it will not be collected can turn into a bylaw issue for you.
