Before the packers or after the truck

Junk Removal for a Move

Movers charge to carry things you are going to throw out anyway, and there is a list of things they will refuse to load at all. Clearing both before the truck arrives is usually cheaper than dealing with either at the other end.

Cheaper than moving it

Long-distance movers price by weight. Anything you'll bin later is worth binning first.

What movers refuse

Paint, propane, chemicals, and open food don't go on a truck. They still have to go somewhere.

Timed to your closing

Tell us the date the keys change hands and we'll say honestly what's realistic.

The cheapest thing to move is the thing you do not move

Local movers in Ontario typically bill by the hour and long-distance moves by weight, and both of those are meters running on objects you have already decided you do not want. A dresser nobody likes costs money to carry down the stairs, money in truck space, and money to carry up the stairs at the other end — and then it sits in the new basement.

The awkward part is that the decision is easiest to avoid. It is genuinely faster to let the movers take everything and sort it out later, which is how people end up paying to relocate a broken treadmill. If something is not coming out of the box at the new place, it is worth about fifteen minutes of triage now.

What movers will not put on the truck

Separate from the economics, there is a category movers simply decline, largely because of insurance and transport rules. Nobody tells you until the day, and then it is your problem with a truck waiting.

  • Paint, stain, solvents, and thinners
  • Propane tanks, gas cans, and anything else flammable
  • Pool and garden chemicals, motor oil, and car batteries
  • Open or perishable food, and often anything frozen
  • Aerosols, ammunition, and fire extinguishers

Two different jobs: before the packers, or after the truck leaves

People assume this is one booking, and it is usually two decisions.

Clearing before the packers arrive is the cheaper of the two and the one we recommend. Less goes on the truck, the movers work faster in emptier rooms, and you are not paying to relocate anything you have already written off. It also means we are working around your furniture rather than a house full of boxes.

Clearing after the truck leaves is what most people actually end up booking, because it is only once the rooms are empty that you find what was behind everything, and because a closing date leaves no room to argue about a shelf. This is the version to book if the property has to be handed over broom-clean. It tends to be a smaller load but a harder deadline.

Donation, and being honest about it

Anything genuinely reusable gets offered to a donation route rather than tipped, and that is included in the price rather than an upsell. But it is worth being straight about what qualifies: charities in Durham have gotten much stricter, and a sofa with a tear, a mattress of any age, or a chipped particle-board dresser will be declined at the door.

If an item is in genuinely good condition and you have a week or two before closing, you will do better arranging the donation yourself, because the charity will collect it free and you will get the receipt. Our advantage is speed and certainty on a deadline, not getting a better outcome for a good sofa.

Questions we get asked

Before, if you have the choice. Anything cleared before the truck arrives is weight and hours you do not pay a mover to handle, and emptier rooms make the move itself faster. Book it for after the truck leaves if the property has to be handed over empty and you would rather deal with what turns up behind the furniture in one go.
